This impressive beacon was constructed by the local scrap metal dealer free of charge and erected on land given to the parish by a local retired farmer. It was built for and first used as part of a nationwide chain in 1988 during the Armada celebrations and has been lit many times since, the most recent being for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.
The Beacon sits on top of Okeford Hill and from here on a clear day you can see for miles. There is a picnic area and car park which is often used as a starting point for walkers to explore the countryside via the many rights of way which include the famous Wessex Ridgeway. From here the Dorset Downs lay below and in the surrounding countryside that makes up neighbouring villages are the Roman hill forts of Hambledon and Hod.
